Babel
A free research tool for reading Chinese characters and the languages around them, published by BurrowsHallow Press. It will always be free to use, with no account and no subscription.

How Babel works
Every statement has a source
Babel will show where each statement comes from and how certain it is: attested by a source, a scholar’s interpretation, or not yet known.
Nothing invented
When no reviewed source says something, Babel will say so rather than fill the gap.
Free, always
No account, subscription or payment. Babel is part of the press’s public work.
Research tools are not open yet
Before Babel shows any reference data, every source it draws on must complete a licensing review. That review is under way. Until it is finished, this page shows only BurrowsHallow’s own work.
Try it now: inside a character
Type or paste up to 32 characters to see how each one is encoded: its code point, and the bytes a computer stores. The calculation happens in your browser; nothing you type is sent anywhere.
| Character | Code point | UTF-8 bytes | UTF-16 units | HTML reference |
